Why is the plan that claimed Coombs St. not happening?
The Long Range Facility Team felt it was important to look at other options to meet the recommended changes. The safety and security issues identified previously with the current elementary school entrance and playground still exist, however the plan to permanently take over the section of Coombs St. directly south of the elementary school was not viewed as ideal for the community. Therefore, a new plan was created that would modify Coombs St. and incorporate a third lane for school use only and renovate space to create a new elementary school entrance and new offices and classrooms. This change was approved by the Smithton R-VI Board of Education through the adoption of the Long Range Facility Plan. The school district and the City of Smithton have established an agreement approved by the City Council that allows for Coombs to be modified by the school district to the south of the elementary school between Marvin and Myrtle Ave. without shutting it down.

Legacy represented well this weekend as they wrapped up the competition season at Hollister! We are so proud of the growth that these students have shown this year and we look forward to where they go from here! Elementary update:
Proposition T.I.G.E.R.
The five classrooms originally built in 1929—and still serving both our high school and elementary students—are getting a much-needed renovation!
This important project will bring major upgrades, including:
Improved electrical systems
Updated plumbing
Enhanced technology capabilities
Modernized lighting
In addition, we’ll be refreshing the learning environment with improvements to floors, walls, and ceilings in these spaces.

Renovations to the current playground will create safer access to equipment and play surfaces for students throughout the school day. The redesigned space will bring the playground closer to the school building, making supervision easier and more efficient.
In addition, the playground will be separated from public areas, enhancing both student safety and overall building security.

The Junior High and High School will have a designated, covered, and well-lighted entryway for students and staff. This new space will provide a safer, more comfortable area to wait while entering or leaving the building—especially during inclement weather or early morning and evening hours.
Safety and accessibility remain top priorities, and this enhancement is another step toward ensuring a secure and welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors.
