Smithton Board of Education votes 7-0 to approve Long Range Facility Plan and Proposition T.I.G.E.R. Together Investing in Growth, Environments and Resources

A huge thank you to the Long Range Facility Planning Team for their dedication over the last several months.  The team of community members, staff and board members met to evaluate the campus from top to bottom.  They then created categories and project lists for campus improvements.  The entire plan they developed can be found on our website following this link.

The top priority projects were designated as “Priority 1” and determined to need immediate attention.  These were primarily Exterior Projects and help to alleviate some of the safety concerns noted during the evaluation:

In order to fund these projects the board voted unanimously to place an election on the April 7, 2026 ballot.  Voters in the district will have the opportunity to approve a $0.45 increase to the total levy for the school district.

The plan would include modifications to Coombs St. as opposed to previous plans that included taking over the street.

Please share this information with others and plan to vote on April 7, 2026.

Where do we rank academically with the rest of the area schools and how does this help with education?
We keep track of our student performance on state testing (often called MAP Testing) as compared to our Kaysinger Conference schools. Over the past few years we have been ranked #4 and #6 and #7 out of our 9 tested conference schools. Our goal is to be in the top third and our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) focuses on academic achievement and recruitment and retention of quality staff. The bond proceeds will allow us to not take away from our operating levy (Fund1), which allows us to pay our staff and remain competitive in the region for pay. Not taking from that levy means that we can
better meet our salary and wage goals, which are part of our recruitment and retention priority in our CSIP.

Our new Early Childhood classrooms will provide the most appropriate space for teaching and learning for our preschool and PreK students. These thoughtfully designed classrooms will support early learning by creating an environment that is safe, engaging, and tailored to the needs of our youngest learners.

👏 Shoutout to Karsen Asbury for his work with the Moose International Youth Awareness Program! Through the Sedalia Moose Lodge 1494, he created and presented his own “Kids Talk” on nutrition, sharing healthy habits with younger students at several locations in the community. This program takes dedication and a commitment to helping others, and Karsen did an outstanding job representing Smithton. We’re proud of you, Karsen! 🐯 🖤 💛

If the bond passes, when do we have access to the money and where does it go?
Once a bond issue passes, the full amount of the funds become available within 30 days. The funds will be held in a separate bank account at any bank of the district’s choosing that can properly collateralize the funds.

The entrance to the elementary building will be relocated to provide additional parking for elementary school families and patrons attending campus events. This change will also allow the public to safely access the building throughout the day without interfering with the playground area, helping keep our students safer while they play and learn.

When did the Long Range Facility Plan start?
The Long Range Facility Plan team was formed from a group of interested community members, staff members and board members in the summer of 2025 with the first meeting on September 4, 2025. Members reviewed facility condition audit information collected by other members in the following categories: site work, building envelope and building interior. The group then reviewed audit information gathered from industry technicians in the following categories: plumbing systems, electrical systems, technology systems and a complete Safety Assessment. All of this information was organized into four Project Sections: Exterior Projects, Interior Projects, Campus Resource Projects and Competition and Performance Space Projects. From this information a plan developed which included priorities of 1 through 5. This plan was adopted by the Smithton R-VI Board of Education during the regular public meeting held on January 26, 2026.
