Partnering With Families for Better Health

The Smithton R-VI School District School  recognizes its responsibility to protect the health of students and employees from the risks posed by communicable diseases. A new type of coronavirus, abbreviated COVID-19, is causing an outbreak of respiratory (lung) disease. It was first detected in China and has now been detected internationally. We do know that it is contagious, that the severity of illness can vary from individual to individual, and that there are steps we can take to prevent the spread of infection.

We want you to know that our district is encouraging our students and staff to take simple steps in an effort to prevent the spread of respiratory infections, including the flu and the common cold and we appreciate that we can count on our Smithton families to reinforce the same practices in the home. These include:

  • Staying home when they are sick.

  • Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after they blow their nose. Help young children do the same. If hands are visibly dirty, use soap and water to clean hands.

  • If soap and water are not readily available, using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

  • Advising persons to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Following the school's routine cleaning and disinfection program. Emphasizing to clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

  • Covering coughs or sneezes with a tissue, then throwing the tissue in the trash and cleaning hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not readily available).

  • Urging students and staff to get a flu shot during the flu season.

  • Providing adequate supplies for good hygiene, including clean and functional handwashing stations, soap, paper towels, and alcohol‐based hand sanitizer.

Some additional precautions being taken by the District are listed below:

  •  Increased cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces
  • Presentations/videos on correct hand washing techniques
  • School nurse assessing students and staff for symptoms of illness
  • Up to date contact information is requested if the event a student becomes ill
  • Posted reminders regarding healthy practices
  • Frequent opportunities for students to wash hands and practice preventative measures
