On February 18th the Smithton R-VI Board of Education adopted the 2019-2020 District Calendar. Last year's legislative session included Senate Bill 743 and House Bill 1606 which mandated that starting in the 2019-20 school year district calendars will be based on a minimum of 1,044 hours with no requirement for days. A committee of teachers and administrators developed the calendar including 60 additional hours of instruction built in for inclement weather. Previously (including the 2018-19 school year) the Smithton R-VI Schools had been operating on a 174 day calendar. The greatest benefit to the new calendar is that every hour of make up time for inclement weather is built in which means the calendar as adopted by the board will not change, due to time missed for weather or travel advisories, during future years. Therefore it should be much easier for families to plan vacations and other events that typically occur during school hours. It is important to note that this calendar represents the greatest amount of instructional hours allowed by law, but is still shorter than the previous 174 day calendar.
